He began at ABC, Inc. in 1960, holding significant roles such as General Manager of the Television Network, Vice President of the Broadcast Division, and President of the Leisure Activities Group, ultimately becoming the youngest member of ABC's Board of Directors.
In 1977, he became President of Ziff Corporation, overseeing Ziff-Davis Publishing and Broadcasting. From 1982 to 2007, Pompadur was Chairman and CEO of RP Companies, managing television and radio stations, as well as cable systems.
During his time at News Corporation (1998-2008), Pompadur served as Executive Vice President and Chairman of News Corp Europe, where he played a critical role in launching Sky Italia and News Outdoor. After stepping down from News Corp, Pompadur became a Senior Advisor to Oliver Wyman, focusing on media consulting in the Middle East, and served as Global Vice Chairman of Media and Entertainment at Macquarie Capital. He remains active as an investor and advisor, serving on the boards of Nexstar Broadcasting Group and Truli Media Group, among others.

Barry began in film as a publicity copywriter at Twentieth Century Fox, later becoming Vice President of Publicity at Walt Disney Pictures and Senior VP of Marketing at MGM. He worked with iconic talents including Tom Hanks, George Lucas, and Martin Scorsese. Transitioning into writing and production, he served as Executive VP at TMS, producing notable animated series and films, including Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. Barry also co-founded Golden Ocean Entertainment, creating the groundbreaking animated series Flutemaster, the first CCTV-financed Western series. His live-action screenplay Gold Diggers: Secret of Bear Mountain was produced by Universal.
A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Writers Guild, and Dramatists Guild, Barry holds a BA and MA in English from NYU and has lectured internationally on film production and marketing.
